Jewellery Care & Cleaning at Home: Keep Gold & Diamonds Sparkling — AT Jewels
Share
Saturday, 08 August 2026 — a quiet-morning note from me on something every jewellery family asks me about: how to keep your gold and diamonds sparkling at home, safely, without spoiling anything.
In short: For everyday care, a bowl of lukewarm water with a drop of mild dishwashing liquid and a soft brush (a baby toothbrush is perfect) cleans most gold and diamond jewellery beautifully. Skip toothpaste, harsh chemicals, ultrasonic machines on fragile or treated stones, and hot water on glued or kundan/jadau pieces. Wear jewellery last when getting ready and take it off first at night — that one habit keeps it brighter than any cleaner.
Why gold and diamonds lose their shine
Nothing is wrong with your jewellery when it looks dull — it is just doing its job of sitting close to your skin. A thin film of body lotion, perfume, sweat, hair oil and everyday dust settles into the grooves and behind the diamonds, and because a diamond works by letting light in and bouncing it back, even a light film makes it look flat. Gold itself does not rust or tarnish the way silver does, but the surface picks up the same grime. The good news: almost all of it lifts off with warm water and a gentle touch. You rarely need anything stronger.
The safe home-cleaning method (works for most gold & diamond pieces)
Take a small bowl of lukewarm — not hot — water and add one or two drops of mild dishwashing liquid. Let the piece soak for ten to fifteen minutes so the film loosens. Then, with a soft brush, work gently around the diamonds and into the grooves, especially behind the stones where light enters from underneath. Rinse in clean water (keep the drain closed or use a strainer — small pieces love to escape), and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. For plain gold chains and bangles, the same bath plus a wipe with a jewellery polishing cloth brings back the glow. Do this once a month for pieces you wear often, and your jewellery will look years younger than its age.
What NOT to do — the mistakes that cost people
Please avoid toothpaste, baking soda and "home hacks" that scrub — they are abrasive and leave micro-scratches on gold and on softer coloured stones. Keep bleach, chlorine and strong cleaning liquids far away; they can discolour gold alloys and weaken the metal over time, which is also why it is wise to remove jewellery before swimming or cleaning the house. Be gentle with anything that is glued, enamelled, kundan or jadau, or set with emeralds, pearls or other delicate stones — these do not like soaking, heat or ultrasonic machines, and are best simply wiped with a soft dry cloth or left to a professional. When in doubt, do less, not more.
Everyday habits that matter more than any cleaner
The simplest rule I give every customer: jewellery goes on last and comes off first. Put it on after your perfume, cream and hairspray have settled, and take it off before you sleep, bathe or exercise. Store each piece separately — a soft pouch or a lined box compartment stops chains from tangling and stops a diamond in one ring from scratching the gold of another. Keep a soft polishing cloth in your drawer for a quick wipe after wearing. These small habits do more to protect your investment than any liquid ever will.
When to bring it to us instead
Some jobs are worth leaving to a jeweller: loose or wobbly stones, a clasp that has stopped gripping, a ring that has thinned over years of wear, or a heavy bridal set before a big function. At AT Jewels we clean, check settings and re-polish pieces properly — it is a small thing that saves people from the heartbreak of a lost diamond down the road. If a stone feels loose or you hear a tiny rattle, stop wearing it and let us look; catching it early is always cheaper than replacing a stone.

Frequently asked
How do I clean gold jewellery at home safely?
Soak it for ten to fifteen minutes in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dishwashing liquid, brush gently with a soft brush, rinse in clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, bleach and very hot water — and be extra gentle with kundan, jadau, enamel or delicate stones like emeralds and pearls.
Can I clean my diamond ring with toothpaste?
Better not to. Toothpaste is mildly abrasive and can leave tiny scratches on the gold and on softer stones over time. Warm soapy water and a soft brush do the same job far more safely.
How often should I get my jewellery professionally cleaned?
For pieces you wear daily, a professional clean and a quick setting-check once or twice a year is ideal — sooner if a stone feels loose or a clasp is weak. Bridal and heavy sets are also worth a professional clean before a big function.
