Good morning — here's where gold and silver stand this Thursday, 17 September 2026, the morning after the US Federal Reserve's rate decision.
In short (17 September 2026): 24K gold is around ₹1,53,440/10g and 22K around ₹1,40,650/10g; silver is about ₹2,45,000/kg. The US Fed raised interest rates by a quarter point and hinted at one more this year, which is keeping a lid on both metals — gold is holding steady while silver has drifted to a one-month low, so the near-term read is broadly sideways. These are indicative India reference levels — AT Jewels' live counter rate is the billing price.
Today's rates at a glance
- 24K gold: around ₹1,53,440 per 10g (indicative)
- 22K gold: around ₹1,40,650 per 10g (indicative)
- Silver: around ₹2,45,000 per kg (indicative)
These are indicative reference levels for India and move through the day. The only billing rate is AT Jewels' live counter/board rate — in store or over WhatsApp.
What is moving the market this week
The big event was last night's US Federal Reserve meeting. The Fed raised interest rates by 0.25% — its first hike in three years — and, more importantly, its own projections pointed to one more increase before the year is out. That is a “hawkish” message, and it pushed US bond yields to their highest since 2007 and firmed the dollar. Higher yields and a stronger dollar usually weigh on gold and silver, because holding metal earns no interest.
What's interesting is how well gold has taken it. Rather than tumbling, gold slipped about a percent on the announcement and then steadied back near ₹1.53 lakh, helped by steady central-bank buying and safe-haven demand. Silver, which always swings harder than gold, took the bigger knock and eased to a one-month low. Closer to home, the rupee is holding around 96 to the dollar, and India's festival and wedding season is beginning to lift physical demand.
The near-term view
For families buying for a wedding or a festival, the honest read is broadly sideways for now. Gold is steady but has a soft ceiling while US rates stay high, so I wouldn't expect it to run away in a hurry; silver is the more unpredictable of the two and is sitting near a one-month low. There's another central-bank meeting in Japan on Friday that could add some two-way movement. My usual advice holds: buy by your need and your date, split a larger purchase into parts, and don't chase a single green or red day. This is a general market view, not trading advice.

Will gold prices go up or down this week?
After the Fed's hike and its signal of one more to come, gold looks steady-to-soft rather than strongly rising — broadly sideways with a firm floor. Nobody can be certain about the days ahead, so buy to your own need and timeline rather than trying to time the market.
