What karat actually means

Karat (K) measures how much of a piece is pure gold, out of 24 parts. So 24K is 24/24 — about 99.9% pure. 22K is 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals, roughly 91.6% pure. 18K is 18 parts gold, or 75% pure, with the remaining quarter made up of metals like copper, silver or zinc that add strength and can shift the colour towards rose or white.

Pure gold is beautifully bright, but it is also very soft — it bends, scratches and loses shape easily. That's why the metals mixed into 22K and 18K aren't a compromise on quality; they're what make the gold wearable, durable and able to hold a design or a diamond in place for decades.

24K — purity you hold, not wear

Twenty-four-karat gold is the purest form you can buy, which makes it the natural choice for coins, bars and gifting on occasions like Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya. Because it is so soft, it isn't practical for rings, bangles or anything worn daily — the shape simply won't survive regular use. If your goal is to hold gold for its value or to gift something in its purest form, 24K is the answer. If your goal is to wear it, look at 22K or 18K.

22K — the heart of Indian jewellery

For traditional Indian jewellery — wedding sets, bangles, chains, temple designs — 22K is the classic and most popular choice. At 91.6% purity it keeps that deep, warm gold colour buyers love, while the small amount of alloy gives it enough strength to be worn and handed down through generations. Most hallmarked "916" gold you see is 22K. It's the karat I'd point most families to for wedding and festival buying.

18K — strength for diamonds and daily wear

Eighteen-karat gold is harder and more scratch-resistant than 22K, which is exactly why it's preferred for diamond jewellery, engagement rings and pieces you'll wear every day. A diamond setting needs a firm metal to grip the stones safely, and 18K holds prongs and pavé work far better than softer, purer gold. It also comes in lovely rose and white tones. So which should you buy?

A simple way to decide: buy 24K if you want purity to hold or gift (coins and bars). Buy 22K for traditional gold jewellery, wedding sets and pieces you want to feel rich and last for years. Buy 18K for diamond jewellery and anything you'll wear daily, where strength matters most. Whatever the karat, always insist on a BIS hallmark so the purity you pay for is the purity you get.
